Born in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture. After graduating from local elementary, junior high, and senior high schools, he went to graduate school in the U.S. at his own expense. After completing his master’s program, he returned to Japan and began his teaching career at the former Foreign Language College in Nagoya City, run by Kawaijuku Gakuen, where he worked for three years before being hired as an assistant at the University of Technology and Science in Toyohashi, where he worked as a lecturer and assistant professor (now associate professor) for 16.5 years. When Ritsumeikan University, headquartered in Kyoto, established a new campus in Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture, and relocated some of its corporate departments, he was assigned as a professor in the Faculty of Economics. He then moved to the Faculty of Information Science and Technology, which became independent from the Faculty of Science and Technology, while concurrently serving in an independent graduate school (Graduate School of Language Education and Information Studies), and has devoted himself mainly to English education. He retired from a tenured professor and then completed his five-year term as a specially appointed professor, but he has been continuing his educational activities as a class instructor (part-time lecturer). He was a visiting scholar both at the University of British Columbia in Canada and Queensland University of Technology in Australia. He was a co-editor or Editor-in-Chief for CALL-EJ (http://callej.org/) for 23 years (1999-2022). He has traveled to 45 countries for international academic conferences and personal trips.
