In 1983, when I was still an assistant at TUT, I applied for the special summer program (6 weeks) for English language teachers at Applied Linguistics Centre (Currently Department of English and Applied Linguistics) of Reading University in the UK sponsored by Monbusho (the Ministry of Education, currently MEXT) and was happily granted as one of 10 national university trainees. I was the youngest among the members. Other five professors from private universities also join the program. I was so excited about going to the UK because it was my first trip to the UK, needless to say. We flew with JAL from Narita to London via Alaska because there was no direct flight then. The only problem for me, in particular, was that I had to purchase roundtrip biz class tickets like other national university professors through a Monbusho-linked travel agency, and it cost half of the given budget. Since I could not leave my partner for a total of 8 weeks, I asked her to study English while home staying in London during my stay in Reading where I could meet her over the weekend by taking about 30 mins by express train to London. She had to fly by herself via Hong Kong to London, so I was a bit worried about her trip if she could manage it safely or not. Of course, she could handle everything OK, fortunately.

1983年は豊橋技術科学大学でまだ助手の職位で4年目であったが、当時の文部省が募集していた英国のレデイング大学応用言語学センターでの大学英語教員夏季6週間研修プログラムに応募し、他の国立大学教員9名と私立大学教員5名と一緒に参加できることになった。参加者の中では一番の若手教員であった。英国へ行くこと自体初めてであったので､とても興奮させられた。当時はダイレクトフライトはなく、アラスカ経由で北極の上空を飛んで行くルートだった。また、どういうわけか文部省関連の旅行会社を使い、国立大学からの他の参加者と一緒に、JALのビジネスクラスで往復するように求められ、予算の半分吹っ飛んでしまった。まだ､子供もいなく、パートナーを一人日本に置いておくのも心配であり、彼女の英語力を伸ばす意味でも、ロンドンの英語学校で、ホームステイをしながら、夏季講習に参加してもらうようにしたが、往復の旅費を節約するため、香港でのトランジットもある南回りのルートで往復してもらった。初めての海外一人旅だったので、少し心配であったが、結果として何とかうまく往復旅行ができた。

During the 6-week summer program, I stayed in a dorm there and had classes at ALC to relearn via various lectures regarding Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and also participated in some excursion trips like a musical at a local theatre, Shakespeare drama at Stratford-upon-Avon, a classic concert at the Royal Albert Hall, etc. They entertained us and also were so useful to understand British culture. Every weekend, I rode an express train and went to see my partner in Ealing, London, and enjoyed shopping or eating out together while I myself stayed overnight at her homestay place. Her host family who then ran small jewelry biz was so kind Irish family and I had an enjoyable time exchanging cultural information with each other over dinners.

6週間の夏季研修プログラムの間、私はキャンパス内にあった寮の1つに滞在し､中央部にあった応用言語学センターデ外国語としての英語教育教授法を再学習しながら、英語能力の向上も試みた。地元でのミュージカル、ストラットフォードアポンエイボンのシェイクスピア劇場での鑑賞、ロンドンの呂やるアルバートホールでのクラシック・コンサートの鑑賞といったオプショナル・ツアーにも参加した。言うまでもなく、それらは英国文化を知る上でとてあったし、あったし、楽しませてくれた。週末はロンドンのイーリングにいたパートナーに会うため、急行列車で往復し、ロンドンでの観光やショッピングを楽しみ、ホームステイ先に泊めてもらった。ホストはジュエリー店を経営していたアイリッシュ系のとても親切な家族で日英文化交流を楽しめた。

After the summer program, some participants returned to Japan directly or some others traveled around the UK or other European countries before they returned to Japan. I was one of the latter group, and with my partner, we rented a car and drove around England, Scotland, and Wales while staying at B&Bs. I was so excited to see unknown places like the mysterious Stonehenge, beautiful Cambridge University campus, wall-sounded York, a culture-rich and historical city like Edinburgh, RockNess, famous castles in Wales, etc.

夏季研修プログラムが終了後は他の参加者たちもそれぞれの計画に基づき、すぐに帰国した者や英国内や欧州の国々へ旅行しながら帰国の途についた。私とパートナーは2週間レンタカーを借りて、大ブリテン島をドライブ旅行した。主としてB& Bを利用しながらストーンヘンジ、ケンブリッジ大学、ヨーク、エジンバラ、ネス湖やウエールズの古城などあちこちを訪問した。

One good memory in Edinburgh was meeting an old Scot who loved communicating with Japanese travelers in the Queen Elizabeth Park. He actually guided us around the park and then invited us to join his next day’s lunch at his home near the park before we left to the north. He was probably only after losing his beloved partner. We accepted his kind invitation and visited his home for lunch and gave him some Japanese gifts we had brought.

今でも思い出すのは、エジンバラのクイーン・エリザベス公園で出会った某老人が公園を案内してくれ、翌日エジンバラを去る前に昼食に招待してくれたことである。パートナーに先立たれ、孤独で旅行客に声をかけて、寂しさを忘れようとしていたのであろう。昼食への折絵に日本から持参した置物のお土産をあげた。
