Retrospective/回顧: 立命館大学情報理工学部ので教員生活(その1)/Teaching &Research life at Faculty of Information Science and Engineering, Ritsumeikan University (1)

The College of Information Science and Technology (hereafter referred to as “CISE”) was newly established in 2004, independent from the College of Science and Engineering. I had been a member of the preparatory committee for the establishment of the College of Information Science and Engineering in 2003, assisting in the preparation of a new English curriculum and the appointment of new full-time English faculty members. When I was asked by Professor Eiji Okubo, the chairperson of the preparation committee and the first Dean of the Faculty (now Professor Emeritus), to transfer from the Faculty of Economics to the CISE. The main reasons for this move were that it would be easier to obtain advice from faculty members in the CISE on further research and practice of specialties such as CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning), and to purchase and maintain an up-to-date server for the English education on the online program, as well as to provide the teaching/learning multimedia materials for the program. The CALL practice environment will be very advantageous in terms of purchasing and maintaining a state-of-the-art server for our online English program, as well as in terms of securing an excellent student assistant who will be indispensable in the development of the teaching/learning multimedia materials. The individual laboratory was located at the far end of the third floor of the Creation Core, which was two-thirds the size of the individual laboratory on the fourth floor of the Across Wing during my time at the Faculty of Economics, and although it felt a little cramped, it was not a major problem to stay by myself. The first English education curriculum began in the style of “English for Specific Purposes (ESP),” in which the students were required to reflect on their basic learning methods (Study Skills) at university and learn basic knowledge of information science in English from the viewpoint of “relearning. The CALL class was offered once a week, and the online program was managed using our own server. I alone was responsible for the development and maintenance of the online program, which was offered once a week. It was a very responsible role, but with the help of the student staff of the CISE, whom I had hired since my time in the Faculty of Economics, I was able to provide a smooth online web-based English learning program.
